When my sister and I were small and the snow came down, we would put our snowsuits on and stake out our battleground and say, "Let's have a snowball fight!" Let's have a snowball fight. We'd build forts we could hide behind. They had peepholes so we could see if it was time to lay down low or unleash on the enemy and have a snowball fight. Have a snowball fight. I would let 'er rip, it would hit her lip. She would stagger back— I'd wait for her attack. I'd say, "Are you okay?" She'd say "WAHHHHHHH!" With tears in her eyes, she would run inside. So much for our snowball fight. So much for our snowball fight. I'd say, "I'm sorry I hit you in the face," and follow her as she ran to the door. With tears freezing on her cheeks, she'd say, "I don't wanna play with you anymore! I'm done with our snowball fight." But the next day we'd do it again because kids have the shortest memories. She'd take a snowball to the head and fall down on her knees and say, "My EAR! You hit my ear!" She'd say, "I think I'm deaf! I can't hear myself whining!" I'd say, "Sister stay, we're just starting to play. You can let one fly, hit me in the eye. Throw your biggest bomb, just don't tell Mom. I'm still doing chores 'cos of yesterday's wars." She'd cry and say, "Have a GREAT snowball with YOURSELF!" I had a great snowball fight with myself. When she grew up she moved away to a place where there is no snow. She settled down in Arizona, where there's nothing for a mean big brother to throw. I won the battles, she won the war. This much is clear. Maybe next year when she comes for Christmas I can hit her in the other ear. We'll have a snowball fight. We'll have a snowball fight. Hit it.

In a little corner of the world lived a maiden. Pure at heart, good in deed, full of grace, gentle rose. An angelic salutation, holy word, annunciation. She's to be the chosen mother of Jesus, Our Lord. And as she listened to the Voice with her gaze upon the splendor, Love embraced her open heart and she conceived the Holy Lord. Behold the handmaid, behold the servant, "Be it done unto me according to Your Word." And on that day was put in motion the means of our redemption. And the way was opened up As a highway to our God. And a child was born to us, And to us a Son was given. For through the young and blessed Mary came the greatest gift of all. In a little time there would be a celebration. Elizabeth would bear a son, They will call his name John. He will go before the Lord as a faithful messenger. He'll prepare the way for the Lamb who's to come. And on that day was put in motion the means of our redemption. And the way was opened up as a highway to our God. And a child was born to us, and to us a Son was given, For through the young and blessed Mary came the greatest gift of all. Holy, holy, holy Redeemer, Holy, holy is the Lord. Blessed is He who comes to free us. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. And on that day was put in motion the means of our redemption. And the way was opened up as a highway to our God. And a child was born to us, and to us a Son was given, For through the young and blessed Mary came the greatest gift of all.

about

Track 1: "Let's Have a Snowball Fight!" is based on a true, annually recurring story from my childhood. My sister, Alyssa, who is four-and-a-half years younger than me, always retreated from our snowball fights—bawling her eyes out—after approximately five seconds of battle. These dramatic exits frustrated me as a child, but now I can only look back lovingly on these memories of sibling snow play. Also, after I wrote this song, Alyssa informed me that it does, in fact, snow in Arizona. Who knew? I decided to leave this lyrical inaccuracy intact for dramatic effect.

Track 2: I performed this song at my parents' church in Rolla, Missouri, every Christmas Eve for many years, and wanted to record this for my mother, Holly Johnston, as a Christmas present this year. Merry Christmas, Mom. As always, no EBows were harmed in the making of this recording.

Dedicated to the slackers down by the Jordan River, which is chilly and cold. Meet you brothers (and sisters) on the other side.
