about

This is the first original song I have recorded and released since 2007. I wrote it in celebration of my wife, Becki, and her love of thrift shopping, which has proven contagious over the 11 years we have been married. Happy birthday, Love—this one is for you!

I began working on this song in February and hoped to offer it to Becki as a Mother's Day present, but the pandemic slowed down the proceedings. Nevertheless here it is. I am learning the art of music production again as I go, and applying what I have learned about writing in the past thirteen years to the process, too. I am happy with how it sounds—hopefully you will enjoy it, too.

Here's hoping I can make more music in the future . . . and not 13 years from now either.

Lyrics

Verse 1

You gave me eyes to see treasures where I
saw none before.
On the floors and shelves of antique shops
and secondhand stores.

On Saturday we drive downtown to the
Social Service League.
They find homes for the things we own that
we no longer need.

Chorus

Inside I find albums for a dollar
and strike gold—five John Cale CDs—
while you try on vintage clothes.

You look like a million bucks, Darling,
in your seven-dollar dress.
It’s a thrift-store fashion show.

Verse 2

Another weekend we search for Royal
China Star Glow.
At Hoopla we buy melamine containers and
milk glass bowls.

A cat sculpture for the basement sill.
A typewriter for me.
A black Corona Standard Speedline.
Evie presses the keys.

Chorus

At the Antique Mall, a taxidermied
wild cat locks eyes with Evie.
She jumps out of her skin.

Ceramic whales for the basement bathroom—
tails raised, they keep watch for us.
They’ll let us know if it floods again.

Bridge

Chorus

In September I will be 42.
Thank God you love antique things
I’m going to be one soon myself.

When you found me I was getting dusty.
You took me home, made me your own.
You couldn’t leave me on the shelf.
