Lord keep me away from all things sinister— You know I seldom do what I should. Because I'm the kind of man who walks along the path and finds himself lost in the woods. Lord keep me away from all things sinister— from sirens by the sea. Because I'm the kind of man whose ears bend easily to voices such as these. Shine on me. Be my light. Shine on me. Be my light. Lord keep me away from all things sinister— from sorrow without hope. Because I'm the kind of man who forgets innocence and recalls it at the end of his rope. Shine on me. Be my light. Shine on me. Be my light. Lord keep me away from all things sinister— from mistaking kings for You. Because it's easy to forget that the one who calls the shots Has Someone he must answer to . . . Shine on me. Be my light. Shine on me. Be my light. Lord keep me away from all things sinister— from death, Lord, keep me away. When Death draws his sword, remember me, oh Lord, and I won't feel the blade.

about

I recorded these two demos on my Google Pixel 3 in June of 2019 right before vocal polyps reduced my range and left my voice sounding forever froggy. If all goes according to plan I go under the knife early next year for my septum and vocal cords on the same day. Here's hoping. I really miss singing.

That being said, I cannot say I am crazy about the rawness of my voice and guitar in these demos, but I decided to share them anyway. Maybe they will sit better with you than they do with me.

The first song is a rewrite of one I conjured up back in 2002. I modified both the lyrics and music, and the wholly new stanza is me asking my fellow believers not to worship kings, more or less. Call it my lone political moment—and please vote next week.

The second song is a cover of Daniel Amos's "Jesus Wept," which comes from their amazing "Dig Here Said the Angel" record. I played this in church and decided to record it afterward for posterity.
